How to Reactivate Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Online
7/8/2025
To manage your financial records effectively in QuickBooks Online, it’s essential to know how to reactivate accounts in your Chart of Accounts. The Chart of Accounts is the backbone of your accounting system. It helps you organize your money and track your financial progress. If you've ever deactivated an account and need it back, here’s how to reactivate it.
Step 1: Access the Chart of Accounts
First, you need to log into your QuickBooks Online account. Once logged in, follow these steps:
- Click on the Gear icon located in the upper right corner of the screen.
- From the dropdown menu, select Chart of Accounts.
This will take you to the Chart of Accounts where you can manage your accounts.
Step 2: Display Inactive Accounts
By default, inactive accounts are not visible. To see them, you need to make a small adjustment:
- In the Chart of Accounts, locate the small Gear icon above the Action column.
- Check the box labeled Include inactive. This action will show all inactive (deleted) accounts in your list.
Now, you can see all accounts, whether they are active or inactive.
Step 3: Reactivate the Account
Now that you can see the inactive accounts, you can find the one you want to reactivate:
- Locate the account you wish to reactivate.
- In the Action column next to the account, click on Make active.
After doing this, the account will be restored and available for use in your Chart of Accounts.
Additional Considerations
It’s important to keep in mind some additional factors when dealing with accounts in QuickBooks Online:
- Default Accounts: QuickBooks Online has certain default accounts that are crucial for its operations. These accounts cannot be deleted or made inactive.
- Impact on Transactions: When you make an account inactive, it doesn’t delete its associated transactions. Those transactions remain part of your financial records and reports. If you reactivate an account, all its historical data, including transactions, will still be available.
This means you do not lose any financial history when you deactivate an account.
